Are you at risk for burnout? Here are the signs and symptoms

The term “burnout” was coined in the 1970s by the American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger. Although it was formerly used to describe the consequences of severe stress and high ideals in “helping” professions such as medicine, nowadays, it can affect anyone.

Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to exhaustion, detachment, feelings of ineffectiveness. -Psychology Today, 2013

Burnout doesn’t happen suddenly; rather, it’s one of those things that creeps up on us over time, which makes it much harder to recognize. Recognizing the signs and symptoms is almost like a red flag from our bodies and minds. As working parents, we know that life has to go on and not everyone has the option of taking time off. Navigating our growing family’s needs and parenting is a consistent juggling act.
